Hammer drilling is a practical method in problematic mixed soil with clay, gravel and big stones. In Finland, hammer drilling is most commonly used steel casing pipes underground. Benefits of the method and projects where it can be used

Hammer drilling (crown drilling) is an drilling method, which can effectively be used in drilling hard and dense soil. Stones and rock are turned into fine gravel as the drill crown at the head of the steel casing pipe rotates and drills the soil material. (Due to Compressed air the head of the drill hits hard on target and breaks the soil efficiently. When the impact is combined to mechanical movement, even very hard soil can easily be crushed. Modern technology of hammer drilling equipment enables working near the surface of structures without being worried about damaging them.)

Hammer drilling works best in mixed soil and thus it is one of the most used drilling methods.

Advantages of this method is that drilling liquids are not needed and the pipe will be installed tightly. After installation depressions under the pipes cannot occur due to tight installation.

Stage 1

Guiding is carried out by using a measuring sensor located just behind the drilling head. The sensor communicates with the control unit of the drilling machine.

HDD – drilling is a technique where a small diameter pilot hole is drilled along a beforehand planned line to the pipeside. In soft soils the pilot hole is drilled by using high pressure flushing and similarly in hard soil by using a so-called mud motor.

Stage 2

When the target pit has been reached, the measuring sensor and drill head are removed and they are replaced by an reaming tool and rotatable connection, which is connected to the product pipe. When pulling the pipe, the bentonite solution lubricates and protects its outer diameter in a way that in time the pipe will adapt to the clay maddrass.

When and why AT – drilling

Guided AT – drilling is best in accurate drillings where the soil consists of rock and stony land or mixed soil. Guided rock drilling works best in casing pipes of electricity and telecommunication cables, water pipes, pressure sewerline and gas pipes.

AT – drilling uses a guided rock drill at the head of the rods thus enabling installation of underground cables and pipes without open trench. The head of the drill is reversible and the direction can be changed, if necessary. The drilling progress is monitored by measuring instruments and that is why the drilling is so accurate.

Guided horizontal auger boring is a fantastic method, because by using the camera mounted to the machinery it is possible to monitor the position of the pilot pit’s centre point. If the pilot pit deviates from the route, it can easily be guided back to the correct route. Due to guidability the inclination of the drillrod may be changed during drilling.

Methodology

Stage 1: Guided pilot drilling

Drilling machinery mounted in ø 2500mm shaft and installed in a desired inclination. Drillrod is being pushed with the drilling machinery and the inclination of the rod is monitored by a camera, which is directed to the centre point inside the drillrod. The inclination can be changed during drilling with the help of the steerable control head.

Stage 2: Augering

Pilot drilling is reamed to the planned diameter by using work pipes with augers inside. The work pipes are used to push pilot drillrods into the receiving pit.

Stage 3: Replacing work pipes with final pipes

Work pipes are replaced with final casing pipes or flow pipes by pushing the work pipes out to the receiving pit.

Soil surveys play an important role when planning crossings. Piperamming is especially applicable in soft soils like clay, silt and loose sand. Piperamming cannot be used in rock or rocky soils.
